Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

Case 3

Age: 84

Sex: Female

History: November 2009. Two years of poor memory, ataxia, and frequency of micturition. Now barely able to walk. No headaches.

Clinical Diagnosis: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)


Pre-Op CT Head

CT head showing enlarged lateral, 3rd, and 4th ventricles with minimal enlargement of the sulci


November 6, 2009 - Dr. Chris Ekong, Neurosurgeon, Regina

Investigation: CSF flow study arranged. This is done in Nuclear Medicine department by injection radioisotope dye into the subarachnoid space via lumber puncture and then scanning the patient's head over 3 days. The dye dissipates within 2 days in normal situations but is still detected in the ventricles in NPH.
